Today in class i attempted to play the head of 'Autumn Leaves' for my major performance. I played the first few bars for 'Autumn Leaves' to Ms Heggie and she told me that the piece was in the wrong key to my Instrument. I needed to transpose from G minor to A minor in order to play the piece in the right key. I tried to sight transpose the first few bars which sounded ok, but Ms Heggie said that she would ask Mr Marsland if he has a already transposed piece to make it easier for me.

Today in class I completed my improvisation assessment, based on the F natural minor scale. I was a little nervous to do this because I couldn’t remember the scale very well. I also don’t really liking playing by myself. I started practising my improvisation on the piano because I felt uncomfortable doing it on the clarinet. The reason I chose the piano was because I would be able to see the notes more clearly. I had two attempts with my improvisation because the first time I did it I accidentally did 18 bars. I found counting the bars really difficult because I needed to improvise the last 2 bars in C major. I think my improvisation sounded okay in the end but could have improved my practising a little bit more, in order to play the last two bars in the right key. Reflection:
Today in class we further investigated the Jazz genre. We looked at a composition that used the ‘F’ natural minor scale. We each had to individually improvise a melody that fit the chord progression and scale. My improvisation was alright. I was initially really worried about improvising and thought that I would probably stuff up because I had never improvised before. I started by playing ‘F’ for the first 8 crotchets and then changed the rest of the notes, ending on the ‘F’. I decided to play this on the piano because I didn’t have my clarinet with me, and I didn’t use any outside notes. After playing my improvisation I was satisfied with the end result. By doing this improvisation I learnt that it is a good thing to end on the tonic- being ‘F’. I am really looking forward to the rest of the Jazz unit because I think it sounds cool and will be fun to learn more about. |
