In today's class we were revising to for test on the following Monday. The class was looking over the sheet we had received earlier in the term. We were focusing on the main factors and attributes of the different styles of music. We each looked over our musical pieces we had composed in the previous classes. Many people were messing around or doing other things because of the upcoming exams but I tried to get as much music revision in as I could. This was my last music class for the year because of how my exams are spaced out. I enjoyed most aspects of the class and have elected to continue music next year.
For this piece composition I have chosen the Romantic style. For the instrumentation I am hoping to use piano and violin. I would usually use alto saxophone for a composition of this style but have chosen Piano as I am able to play and write music. I am still considering the harmony within the song and the chord progression.
During the class I have accomplished more than I expected. The style of the music was originally planned out for romantic but changed halfway to a classical style. The work I did in the first lesson did not save so I am hoping this work does save. In today's class we started to work on our next assessment. I have chosen to do this piece in a romantic style, this style has interested me in the past but i have never had the chance to write my own version. Within the composition I am playing to feature a piano, flute and violin. I think this may be a bit ambitious but I am hoping to get as much done as I can. I using standard time throughout my piece, I may plan in future to change the tempo throughout but this may be difficult.
In today's class we presented the pieces we had recently composed. Earlier in the term our class had listened to Canon in D Major, we then went on in recent classes to compose our own version of this song. The original piece was written for piano with two sharps in the stave. Because I was playing Alto Saxophone I had to transpose. This meant that I had to add an extra 3 sharps, this meant I ended with 5 Sharps.
Within my composition I stuck to the notes within the original chords. Though i did do this but I still had some clashes between the notes. My piece was written in the bass clef and not the treble clef so this lead to some confusion when it came to playing the piece in class. Throughout the rehearsals my group and i have been practising the piece 'All the things you are'. In the rehearsals we would play the 'head' of the piece then continue to improvise a repertoire that lasted eight bars. To complete the piece we would all replay the head then finish. The people in my group were: Steven, Mariah, Illit, Zennon, Marcel and myself. I would play alto saxophone, Zennon on Guitar, Mariah on piano, Steven and Illit and Marcel would play trumpet.
Throughout many lessons the class would continue to play All the things you are. It was then decided that we would play the piece at a concert. We practised much in class which allowed us to improve our improvisations. The performance went ahead and ended up as a great addition to the concert. This lesson we did an improvisation of 'All the Things You Are'. Throughout the lesson I transposed the song for the Alto Saxophone into Eb scale and then played with the class. We learned the Head of the song and then did an improvisation. I had a little bit of trouble with this as i over complicated what we had to do. At the end I did figure out everything. I did have some issues with the notation at the end of the piece and still have to fix some notes.
Arrangement of Lorde's Tennis Court"Statement of Intent"
I am working with Steven, Jacky and Marcel and we will use Trumpet, Piano, Shaker and Drum kit. We will change the style to swing and the instruments in the melody will be replaced with the trumpet Reflection What happened in Rehearsal? At the start of the rehearsal Mariah and David were introduced into our group but unfortunately a group of 6 people did not work and they split off into their own group. We then got to work on our piece and practiced for the rest of the lesson. What Worked? I think most parts of our piece work. The only problem was that one of the shakers that Steven was playing got damaged and is now unplayable. Other than that changing the instrumentation made the piece sound like it could be made into an official cover. What do you need to do next? Our piece needs to be practiced more so it can be perfected but other than that I think we need to see if Steven can acquire either another shaker or some over form of percussion instrument. |
