In our second lesson we finalised our structure and practised over and experimented with improvisations. Our structure was: Sophie trumpet solo - Mel, Illit, Sophie chords, beat, fill - Mel improvisation - Sophie improvisation - Illit improvisation - Mel and Sophie improvisation duo - Mel chords - back to the start with simple melody. We were very happy with this structure and began to experiment with out improvisations.
In our third lesson we cleaned up the improvisations and the rest of the piece. I had a bit of trouble with the rhythm in the solo so we decided that Mel should join me for the solo at the beginning of the song. This sounded cleaner. We then performed later in this lesson and were very happy with our performance because we stuck to our structure and rhythm while also really getting into the song. Although we missed a few notes and beats, and it may have sounded a bit scrappy in some parts, we are still very happy with our final arrangement. We managed to change the song by adding a key change, many improvisations, different instrumentation, different tone colours (as there were different instruments playing different parts to the original) while also retaining the original rhythm and jazzy feel.
